The Losar festival has just been celebrated in Spiti, this is the Tibetan New Year festival which is held in November so that the royal families of Ladak and Spiti can be together before the high mountain passes close for the winter. This year has been very frugal for the inhabitants of the Spiti Valley due to the failure of the pea harvest, their one and only cash crop. Unfortunately it will be a hard winter for the people of the Valley.
We have knitters all over the British Isles who are making the most of the cold evenings sitting by the fire to make sweaters for the children of the Spiti Valley. We are currently exploring ways of transporting these lovely garments to India before the worst of the winter sets in. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to do this economically please contact joanswinnerton@gmail.com.
All of us here at Spiti Projects would like to thank everyone who has so kindly donated, their time, energy and money to the charity throughout this past year. We look forward to seeing you at our next fundraiser in 2011. Wishing you all a prosperous and warm Christmas and New Year.
Best wishes Joan

The Spiti Valley is a remote area high in the Himalayas situated on the Tibetan plateau with almost no rain and snow-covered for 8 months a year. Although originally Tibetan, it's been part of India since the mid 19th century and virtually closed off from the World for most of the last 50 years. www.spiti.org

winter is coming in Spiti
Dear Friends,
Many thanks indeed for your huge support for Dan's talk at the RGS on 2nd December. Many of you have made donations which are much appreciated. As it so happens with tube on that evening, many of you might not have been able to reach the RGS, we feel the Gods must have been with us when we made the very difficult decision to cancel.
However, we have booked the Lecture Theatre at the Royal Geographical Society for Monday 20th June 2011 - a date for your diary, we have a very special speaker coming to join us on that evening, and we look forward to seeing you then.
The Spiti Valley has had the first big snow fall and the Kunzun-La pass is now closed, a little earlier than usual. The Spiti people are in for a hard winter as the cash crops were destroyed during the bad weather in the summer. Many will not have enough to feed their families and keep warm. Any donations for their wellbeing would be most gratefully received.
We will keep you informed of life in Spiti.

October Update
Spiti didn't make into the headlines these past months because of the floods in Ladakh, nonetheless the people of the Spiti Valley have suffered just as badly. Peas are the one cash crop farmed in the area, which was ruined by rain. What was harvested rotted in trucks unable to make the route to Delhi - roads were blocked by landslides and flooding.
The Spiti people are in for a tough winter with very little money to buy food or fuel!
You can help - support Spiti Projects who are hosting a talk by Dan Cruickshank at the RGS on Nov 2nd at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at 020 8901 4737. For more information www.spiti.org

Harvesting in Spiti
The weather is back to normal in Spiti, lovely sunny days. The people are frantically busy harvesting the peas, cutting grass for winter feeding for the animals and next week, they will be gathering in the barley.
The roads are now open and things are back to normal.

Home
I've just returned from a long and arduous trip to the Spiti Valley. The weather was extreme for this time of year and the people of the Spiti Valley are suffering badly from the rains that have destroyed roads and delayed the pea harvest - their most important cash crop. I fear for their well-being over the next couple of weeks.
Spiti Projects is a registered charity, now in its 17th year working to improve the quality of life for the people of the Spiti Valley. We have a fund raising event coming up at the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR on November 2nd 2010. We are privileged to have Dan Cruickshank who will be talking about Buddhist Architecture of the Himalayas, China and India. This illuminating evening is being sponsored by Global Enduro - who run adventures by motorcycle and jeep in many areas of the world.
