The weather is back to normal in Spiti, lovely sunny days. The people are frantically busy harvesting the peas, cutting grass for winter feeding for the animals and next week, they will be gathering in the barley.
The roads are now open and things are back to normal.
The Spiti Valley is a remote area high in the Himalayas situated on the Tibetan plateau with almost no rain and snow-covered for 8 months a year. Although originally Tibetan, it's been part of India since the mid 19th century and virtually closed off from the World for most of the last 50 years. www.spiti.org

Home
I've just returned from a long and arduous trip to the Spiti Valley. The weather was extreme for this time of year and the people of the Spiti Valley are suffering badly from the rains that have destroyed roads and delayed the pea harvest - their most important cash crop. I fear for their well-being over the next couple of weeks.
Spiti Projects is a registered charity, now in its 17th year working to improve the quality of life for the people of the Spiti Valley. We have a fund raising event coming up at the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR on November 2nd 2010. We are privileged to have Dan Cruickshank who will be talking about Buddhist Architecture of the Himalayas, China and India. This illuminating evening is being sponsored by Global Enduro - who run adventures by motorcycle and jeep in many areas of the world.
